Salford charity asks for donations as cost-of-living crisis intensifies

A Salford charity is appealing for clothing donations to support struggling families in the cost-of-living crisis this winter.

Caritas Salford is an organisation that helps disadvantaged people and families within the Greater Manchester and Lancashire region.

In an interview with Mancunian Matters, Claire Briscoe – the communications manager for the charity – said: “The cost-of-living crisis has made things even worse for families and people living below the poverty line.

“As energy prices rise, people will have to choose between feeding their kids and heating their homes and we want to stop that.”

Caritas is asking for donations of clean unwanted clothing that can be given to the less fortunate so they can stay warm this winter with rising food and energy prices.

The charity covers a range of over 620 miles supporting the homeless and families who are living below and around the poverty line.

According to Caritas, in the area there are around 100 people sleeping rough as well as 5000 households including 500 with children who are in temporary accommodation.

Another staggering statistic is that, according to Age UK, 2.8million households of older people will be living in fuel poverty this winter, having to choose whether to heat their homes or have a meal at night.

Charities like Caritas provide vital support for many people like this, and it is necessary that they are supported by the general public.

It provides support via food banks, providing temporary accommodation and places where people can go during the day – especially during winter.

As well, it sponsors and finds accommodation for refugees who have fled war-torn countries, and provides educational opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers.

The clothing appeal will help struggling people stay warm this winter when they may have to find abstract ways of staying warm without turning on their heating.

If you are cleaning out your wardrobes or having a declutter you can help struggling families by donating unwanted clothes to the charity.

Briscoe added: “Even the smallest donation to us as a charity is a massive help for us and for those in needs.”
