Local Elections 2023: First trans councillor in Manchester history elected in Ancoats

The first trans councillor in Manchester City Council was victorious in Thursday’s local elections for Ancoats and Berwick.

Chris Joanne Northwood, representing the Liberal Democrats, won the election with 1,543 votes.

With a turnout of 25%, Northwood beat out the Labour Party candidate by 300 votes.

Speaking to Mancunian Matters, Northwood said: “I’m feeling so overwhelmed.

“I’m so grateful for the trust that’s been put in me. I know it’s a historic moment, but I really stood first for my community and my neighbours.

“As historic as it is, it just proves that trans people want to live our lives and be out there, so that’s what I want to do.”
