Travel advice: Manchester’s Christmas lights switch-on 2014

Travelling to the Annual Manchester Christmas Lights in Albert Square this evening? Some essential travel advice before the celebrations begin…

Transport for Greater Manchester (TGM) is expecting huge crowds this evening, meaning the roads, trams; buses and trains into the centre are to be far busier than usual.

Travellers in the centre are advised to plan their journeys well in advance and to allow plenty of time to travel.

Road closures will be from 6pm-11.30pm and the night’s activities are set to kick off around 7.15, with the potential for delay to journey times possible.

Mancunian comedian, Jason Manford, leads the star-studded bill this evening and is joined by last year’s Britain Got Talent winners – the musical quintet, Collabro.

Harry Potter actor, Warwick Davis, will appear and stars of Shrek the Musical will make an appearance ahead of their run of theatrical performances from December 2.

Tameside singer and former X Factor star, Shane Ward is also performing and Key 103 talent competition winners, The Piccadillys, will also take to the stage.

The event will be closed out in spectacular fashion with a 10-minute firework extravaganza.

Metrolink are running double trams this year, and extra staff will be on hand at some of the busiest platforms.
