Manchester Cathedral to host charity sleepover to raise money for the homeless

More than 100 people are set to wrap up and spend the night in Manchester Cathedral to raise money for the homeless.

Manchester Booth Centre hopes to highlight some of the hardships homeless people have to face every day.

The charity will also be aiming to raise money to provide activities, advice and support for homeless people in Manchester. Last year the event raised more than £40,000.

Participant Lauren Dale said: “This is something very close to my heart.

“I am a constant giver to the homeless of Manchester but now I would like to go that extra mile and par-take in an experience that I’m sure will be an eye opener.”

Manchester Cathedral will be hosting brave sleepers who have the option of sleeping in the grounds or inside the church depending on how bad the weather is.

Staff will be available throughout the night to provide security.

Sleepers will be rewarded a certificate, bread and soup in the evening, drinks throughout the night, and a simple breakfast in the morning.

A Cathedral spokesman said: “The Booth Centre has helped numerous men and women to get back on their feet and it provides an invaluable service in a city where such resources are at a minimum.”

They are hoping to beat last year’s total of £2,000.

Mr Sharpe a teacher from St Peter’s Catholic High School, Wigan, will be taking on the challenge for the second year running. Last year he managed to raise more than £800.

You can join them all on Friday, November, 7, from 8pm, or follow the action from your own bed by following @BoothCentre or the hashtag #McrSleepout.
