Salford charity makes appeal for Christmas food supplies

A Salford charity which helps domestic abuse survivors has issued a plea for food supplies to serve needy families this Christmas.

The Salford Survivor Project, based in Eccles, is asking for specific food items to be donated by Monday, December 11.

The appeal asks for 40 of each specific item, from a range of goods including pasta, tinned goods and preserves.

Jane Gregory, CEO of the charity, started the ‘Mission Christmas’ project seven years ago.

The project was created to provide festive supplies to vulnerable people in the community, including those fleeing domestic abuse.

Jane said: “Parents should not have to choose between being abused and their kids having a good Christmas.”

Every year, 400 to 500 children are given a sack of toys in time for Christmas, with 40 families selected to receive a special food ‘hamper’.

The hampers, which include a full Christmas dinner and selection boxes for the children, are delivered on December 23.

Jane described the project as “a humbling experience. It makes me value the gifts I give my own children more”.

She added that the help provides “an alternative to going back to an unhealthy relationship”.

According to Jane, the charity receives around 50 self-referrals every Christmas, with many more requests to accommodate.

She cited inflated supermarket prices as a reason why families are struggling.

Any leftover supplies are passed to Salford Loaves and Fishes or Salford Food Bank, who re-distribute them to the community.

Contributions can be delivered to 480 Liverpool Road, M30 7HZ. For details visit the charity’s Facebook page
