Restaurants urged to donate meals after homelessness skyrockets in Manchester

Restaurants in Manchester are encouraged to donate meals to homeless people through signing up to a non-for-profit organisation.

Foodinate, launched in 2016, aims to stem food poverty by providing a meal-for-meal deal to those living on the streets just months after it was revealed homelessness had quadrupled in Greater Manchester.

Customers at participating eateries choose dishes marked with the Foodinate logo and the restaurants then fund nourishing meals for local people in need – estimated to be 189 individuals in statistics released earlier this year.

Caroline Stevenson, founder of the scheme, said: “Homelessness is still a major problem in Manchester so I wanted to create a sustainable impact on this issue and that’s exactly what Foodinate aims to do.”

Over 13 million people suffer from poverty across the UK and helping those less fortunate are at the heart of the organisation.

“All restaurants need to do is choose a few options from their menu to include in the campaign, which are signposted by our small menu icon, to support us in our quest,” Ms Stevenson added.

The cost of the meal is covered by the restaurants and currently 8,000 hot meals have been provided to people across the city.

In Manchester, the scheme is supported by George’s Dining Room and Bar in Worsley (owned by footballer Ryan Giggs), Cocoa Cabana in West Didsbury and Well Hung based in the Kitchens in Spinningsfield.

Giggs said: “Foodinate has been a success. We really liked the simplicity of the concept from the outset and we are proud to be one of the first restaurants to sign-up to it.
