The Charlatans legend Tim Burgess teams up with Band On The Wall to launch Manchester ‘rock school’

By Charlie Boydell-Smith

Having recently revealed the excesses of rock and roll life with The Charlatans in his revealing autobiography Tellin’ Stories, there seems no better person than Tim Burgess to launch a real life School of Rock.

This September Manchester venue Band On The Wall will be offering a range of music education courses including Music Industry Management, Sound Engineering and Performance.

The courses will be run in partnership with The Manchester College, aiming to inspire the next generation of artists and industry professionals.

Malcolm Duffin, the Director of Marketing and Communications at Band On The Wall, said: ‘’The Charlatans will forever be entwined with the Manchester music scene and these courses are all about providing young people a route into the music industry, whether they be artists or not.’’

Mr Duffin added: ‘’How many young people can get the chance to use some of the best music facilities available?’’

Band On The Wall is one of the city’s most popular music venues and is currently in the running for NME’s Best Small Venue competition.

There will be a one-day festival in Sackville Gardens on May 29 to celebrate the opening of the course, featuring an appearance from Craig Charles, with Terry Christian acting as compere.

Tim Burgess, who has said he would have ‘given my right for this’ when he was starting out, will kick-off the event with a short set before handing over to students from The Manchester College.

Currently touring his solo album, Oh No I Love You, across Europe, Burgess is set to release new music with The Charlatans later this year.

The festival will be open from 10am to 2pm – entry to the festival will be free.
