MM’s Year in Review: August 2023

Former US president Donald Trump and 18 others indicted on state charges of electoral interference. The investigation based in Fulton County charged Trump and other members of the Trump administration team for interfering into the 2020 presidential election on August 14th.

Train derailment and cable car incident in Pakistan. Not only was there a train derailment in southern Pakistan where 30 people died and 100 more were injured; but a cable car line in the northwest of Pakistan snapped leaving eight people on their way to school dangling hundreds of metres above the ground.

The Lucy Letby trial. August 18 saw the verdict in the Lucy Letby case, Britain’s worst child serial killer. The 33-year old nurse was found guilty of seven counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment – becoming just the third woman alive to be handed a whole-life jail term.

The Crooked House pub scandal. Two men were arrested by Staffordshire Police on suspicion of arson after the iconic pub burnt down on August 5. The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) subsequently called for it to be rebuilt brick by brick and a petition for an open public inquiry was created by residents.

Barbie sets Warner Bros Record. After Greta Gerwig’s Barbie hit the global box office with a storm. It passed $1bn on the global box office on August 7th and it overtook “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” as Warner Bros highest grossing global release – taking $1.34bn by August 28th.

The PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs. Norwegian Viktor Hovland won the BMW Championship by two strokes in a final round 61 where birdied seven of his last nine holes in one of the best ever finished to a PGA Tour event. He followed it up with the Tour Championship a week later to win the PGA’s FedEx Cup – taking home over $20m for the two weeks.

Hojlund signs for Manchester United. Young striker Rasmus Hojlund signed for the Red Devils on August 5 for a fee of 65m. The 20-year old moved from Atlanta and is currently the Champions League’s top scorer despite United’s recent group stage exit.
