Feed the world: Manchester campaigners to descend on London for hunger rally ahead of G8 summit

By Sam Ruffe

Poverty-conscious campaigners from Manchester will join a mass rally next month to call on world leaders to act on global hunger.

Members of CAFOD, Oxfam, and Christian Aid will head to London on June 8 to join thousands of people for the Enough Food for Everyone IF campaign.

The event will take place in Hyde Park and aims to influence world leaders on the issues of global poverty, before they head into next month’s G8 summit

Oxfam North representative Nicola Sansom said: “This is our moment to act on the injustice of global hunger.

“We strongly encourage supporters and friends from the north to join us and ensure that their voice is heard.

“This is our chance to stop one in eight people going hungry.  Together we are stronger.”

The Enough Food for Everyone IF mass rally is just one of a series of events taking place during the build up to the G8 summit.

The summit, which is being hosted by David Cameron in Northern Ireland from June 17 to 18, acts as a forum for the governments of the world’s wealthiest countries.

And with the event taking place on home soil, campaign participants believe this is the perfect opportunity to lobby the G8 leaders.

Manchester area manager of the CAFOD, Ged Edwards, said that now is the perfect time to act.

“With David Cameron in the chair and with the support of more than 200 organisations and thousands of people raising their concern, change is possible,” he explained.

“The way that food is grown, sold and shared out is not working for the world’s poorest people. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

“When the G8 leaders come to the UK this June they have the power to act on global hunger if enough of us demand urgent action.

“People in the Salford Diocese are joining people from all over the country because they want to show that there’s both the need to change the way that food is grown and managed around the world.”

The event aims to create an unforgettable atmosphere for its visitors with live music, big name speakers and activities for all the family.

There will also be inter-faith services taking place across the capital before the mass rally which starts at 2pm.
