Cruel conman tricks Didsbury woman, 92, into fetching glass of water only to swipe cash from her handbag

By David Aspinall

A 92-year-old woman was tricked by a man offering garden work who stole cash from her handbag when she went to get him a glass of water in Disbury on Friday.

The incident occurred at approximately 2.45pm on Catterick Road when the offender, described as a white male, in his mid to late 30’s and wearing a jacket, followed the elderly woman home offering her his gardening services.

The perpetrator then asked the woman for a glass of water and while she was in the kitchen, stole cash out of her handbag which was left unattended in her hallway.

Police Constable Sarah Jackson, from Greater Manchester Police, said: “The victim has felt cheated by this theft, which was carried out by someone who has no issue in taking advantage of the elderly.

“We would urge any witnesses to call us.”

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 4973 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
