Sacked after 16 days: Manchester United ex-coach Rene Meulensteen ousted from Russian club Anzhi

By Marios Papaloizou

After just 16 days in his new managerial position at Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, Manchester United’s highly rated former coach Rene Meulensteen has reportedly lost his job.

The Dutch coach was offered a position on David Moyes’ staff but chose to leave United and take over at Anzhi.

However, sensational reports in Russia suggest that Meulensteen has lost his job and the whole of Anzhi’s first team have been put up for sale.

The editor of Russian newspaper Sports Express tweeted yesterday: “You have to feel for Rene Meulensteen. He’ll be no longer Anzhi manager by tomorrow. Moved aside just 16 days after appointing.”

The chairman of the club’s board of directors Konstantin Remchukov seemed to confirm the reports through twitter.

He said that the club was going to be ‘reformatted’ and a new coach would be appointed.

As well as the shake-up of the club’s structure and coaching staff Remchukov also said that ‘expensive players’ will leave.
