Transfer turmoil at Manchester United as chief executive leaves Australian tour early for ‘urgent business’

A whirlwind day at Manchester United, in which it was revealed that Chelsea lodged an official bid for star striker Wayne Rooney, has culminated in a club boss leaving an Australian tour early to carry out urgent transfer business.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that Rooney is his major transfer target, prompting wild speculation that United chief executive Ed Woodward has left Australia to rectify the situation.

It is not yet clear which deal he is working upon, however United are also confident they can secure the services of Barcelona midfielder and ex-Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.

Woodward is expected to land in Europe at some point tomorrow, where he will pick up the pieces after a day which gave the biggest indication that Rooney will leave the club.

The significance of Woodward’s early return is due to the fact he was supposed to fly home on Sunday anyway, rather than continue with the club to Japan.

The ‘transfer business’ that requires attention is certainly an urgent matter.

Sky Sports News report that Chelsea will not make an improved bid for Rooney, after their initial offer was promptly rejected.

Chelsea deny it involved the use of Juan Mata or David Luiz as bait.

Mourinho said: “We want the player, we made a bid and now it’s up to Manchester United.”
