Guess who’s back…again: Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell eyes World Cup spot after return from injury

By Alex Lanigan

Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell is eyeing up a place in England’s World Cup squad after beginning his long awaited comeback from injury last night.

The 22 year-old has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, and has been out of action since injuring his hamstring in September.

Despite only managing 16 appearances for City since making a £12million switch from Everton, Rodwell believes that his outing for the Elite Development squad is the start of a new era.

“I’m taking it one step at a time,” he told the club’s website.

“Obviously I’m happy with the England result and I’ve got my eye on the World Cup in Brazil, but one step at a time. I’m hoping to get in the (City) team soon and keep playing.”

Rodwell completed a full game for the EDS in their penalty shootout win over Rochdale in the Manchester Senior Cup.

“It was good to get a full 90 minutes under my belt,” he said.

“I’ve been a couple of weeks now, so I think I needed the match practice.

“I’ve not had a lot of game time this season. I’ve missed quite a lot of football so it was god exercise for me.”

Despite only just returning from injury Rodwell is hoping not to waste any time and has declared himself fit for selection to the first team.

“I’m fit so I’m available for selection,” he said.

“I’ve not trained too much but I’m available.”
