Manchester Storm the latest team to be affected by Coronavirus as the EIHL is cancelled

The Elite Ice Hockey League has been cancelled with immediate effect.

Following the Government’s announcement yesterday, bosses at the ten Elite League clubs staged an emergency conference call last night to discuss the impact of impending crowd restrictions in Scotland.

However, overnight two teams reported that they have players in self-isolation leading bosses to cancel the remainder of the season, citing the importance of fan, player and staff health and safety.

In a statement on the EIHL website, league organisers said: “The Elite League has no choice but to shut down the rest of the season.

“The league feels it has taken its ‘can-do, will-do’ efforts to the limit and whilst the outcome is sure to disappoint fans across the country there was no alternative in these unprecedented times.

“We are confident everyone will understand the rationale behind the league’s decision.”

The decision follows yesterday’s announcement that Great Britain’s matches against Poland next month have been cancelled after the Polish Sport Ministry and Polish Olympic Committee advised athletes not to travel.

The EIHL will make further announcements on the future of the 2019/20 season next week.
