Manchester film maker turns to crowdfunding to finance new web series charting high and lows of unsigned band

A Manchester film maker is looking to crowdfund his new web TV series following the ups and downs of an unsigned band in Manchester.

Written by Craig Quinn, the programmes – titled Boys in the Band – will track a three-piece group called The Lads as they take on new management and head out in search of success.

With the fundraising target set at £10,000, Mr Quinn explained the background of the story to MM.

“The Boys in the Band web series started off as a short film and that was the intention for it really but once the final product came out it seemed like something we could run with,” he said.

“So we started writing it as a series and I think we have got enough material for about four series.”

The ultimate goal is for the production to be picked up for television, something which Mr Quinn hopes to by achieve by putting it online to generate a buzz about the programmes.

“We are going to start it online first and see what the TV networks make of it,” he continued.

“That is why we are trying to get the crowdfunding because we want to get the sound mix right for it and get the all-out edit for it absolutely bang on.

“I think this is a story that needs to be told from the point of view of the characters and I think a lot of people will relate to it so I am confident we can get.”

The episodes will feature a number of unsigned acts from Manchester, and Mr Quinn’s experience of working with bands in the city has given him the material to base the shows upon.

If things go to plan, Mr Quinn, who also made the feature film ‘A Mancunian Story’, hopes to start shooting in March after finding the right cast – he is optimistic that the first series will be finished by early summer.

“It is just one of those things that you just have to work hard at and good things will happen,” he said.
