Struggling Manchester Giants hope to ‘raise defensive game’ in one-off Cup clash with Worcester

By Alex Rea

The Giants head to the unbeaten Worcester Wolves tonight in a bid to buckle their dismal start to the season.

Jeff Jones’ side suffered another agonising 98-112 defeat against the Newcastle Eagles last time out and they take on the BBL league leaders in the BBL cup this evening.

Despite remaining rooted to the foot of the table the Giants put in a markedly improved performance against the Eagles, scoring their highest points total so far this season and Jones is hopeful an upturn in form isn’t too far away.

“Worcester have had a great start to the season and are playing with a great deal of confidence that comes with winning,” Jones said after Stefan Gill put in a majestic performance against the Eagles with 25 points, eight assists and a game-high 11 rebounds.

“From our perspective we have to continue to work at getting better defensively.

“It will be a tough test, but we will hopefully raise our game and with it being a Cup game it is a one and done so you never know.”

The cup competition could bring a welcome reprieve from the league for the Giants with defeats beginning to pile up.

Summer signing Rob Marsden and Gill were both named on the bench in the BBL team of the week and their gallant displays represent the key building blocks for Jones to build upon.

However, Jones’ team face the unenviable task of defeating a Wolves side that have won all of their opening four games in comfortable fashion.

The teams tip off at 7:30pm tonight and you can keep updated with all the live scores on the official BBL website.
